Process fluids and process equipment
Blackfast is the room temperature black oxide process that turns steel and cast iron black at around 20 °C. For the complete cycle Phibo supplies the four process fluids and the tanks your parts go through.
- Degreaser, conditioner, blacking fluid and corrosion protector
- Process fluids and blacking paste usually in stock
- Process tanks in plastic or stainless steel, 25 litres and up
- One minute in the blacking bath is enough for a uniform surface
Four fluids
What runs through your tanks
Every step of the cycle has its own fluid: degreaser, conditioner, blacking fluid and corrosion protector.
Degreaser
Removes oil, grease and soiling from the surface. Without that step there is no even black.
Conditioner
Lowers the pH value of the surface, after degreasing and rinsing with water.
Blacking fluid
This is where the part takes on its deep black colour, at around 20 °C.
Corrosion protector
A water-displacing oil that dries and protects the blackened surface, suitable for indoor applications.

From bath to blackened part
The blacking cycle
Four steps, from degreased part to protected part
Parts go through the baths in a fixed order, according to parameters set in advance.
Preparation
The surface is cleaned and degreased, free of mill scale, rust and other residues. That step is essential for a high quality black finish.
Conditioning
After degreasing and rinsing, the parts go into the conditioner to lower the pH value.
Blacking
In the blacking fluid, one minute is enough for a uniform black surface. Above 20 °C or with special materials, thirty seconds can be enough.
Corrosion protection
Finally the parts go into a water displacing oil. It drives out the water and leaves a protective layer after drying.

The tanks your parts go through
We go through the configuration of your blacking line with you. The tanks follow the steps of the cycle.
What a blacking line contains
- Process tanks in plastic or stainless steel
- From small 25 litre tanks to very large industrial tanks
- Manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic
- Working in a closed circuit is possible
- Blacking paste for local and occasional treatment
