Winter servicing

How a robotic mower arrives at the workshop

After a season, caked-on grass, soil and grease sit under the cover and around the cutting disc. Cleaning is part of every winter service, and it is mostly done by hand.

How it works

Cleaning a robotic mower in a top loader

Cleaning a robotic lawn mower during winter servicing means removing caked-on grass, soil and grease from the cover, the chassis and the cutting disc. A top loader is a parts washer that you load from above. The parts sit on a rotating basket and are sprayed from every side with heated water and detergent, in a closed circuit.

Compressed air on the chassis, loading the basket, the bath and grass in the filter.
  1. Compressed air firstUse compressed air to blow away loose grass and coarse dirt first.
  2. Load the basketThe cover and the chassis go on the basket. Remove the battery first and follow the manufacturer's manual.
  3. Close the lid, start the programYou choose the bath temperature and the time. The basket turns past the spray arms.
  4. Unload and reassembleThe parts come out of the machine warm and largely air-dry on their own. The bath drains back into the tank.

Methods compared

Four ways to clean a robotic mower

Workshops often combine two methods. Here is how they compare.

MethodAdvantageDrawback
Brush and clothRemoves loose grass and dry dirt, part by part.Slow on caked-on dirt. The result depends on who does it.
Compressed airBlows away loose grass and coarse dirt first.Oil, grease and caked-on soil stay. The dust spreads through the workshop.
Pressure washerFast on caked-on dirt.High pressure forces water past the seals. Manufacturers advise against it.
Top loaderWashes grass, soil, oil and grease off the cover, chassis and cutting disc, on a rotating basket.Remove the battery first. Follow the manual.

Manufacturer advice: robotic mower manufacturers advise against using a pressure washer.

All year round in your workshop

Still at work after winter servicing

Robotic mowers are mostly cleaned in winter. The rest of the year, the same basket washes the parts that every garden machinery workshop takes in.

  • Ride-on mower decks and bladesGrass and soil under the deck, without scrubbing.
  • Chainsaw, leaf blower and brushcutter partsCovers, sprockets and clutches, full of oil and sawdust.
  • Engine partsCylinders, crankcases and valves of garden machinery, before the overhaul.
  • Compact tractor partsFor dealers who also service agricultural and grounds equipment.

Not sure which machine fits? Send a photo of the mowers you service. We'll tell you which top loader is right for you.

Advantages

What a parts washer does better than manual work

  • Fully automaticYour employee loads the basket, closes the lid and carries on with other work in the meantime.
  • Consistent qualityEvery part gets the same cleaning, whoever runs the machine and however busy it is.
  • More ergonomicNo more scrubbing, brushing or spraying. Less strain on the back, shoulders and wrists.
  • More thorough in hard-to-reach placesA rotating basket removes grass caked around the cutting disc and under the cover better than manual work.
  • A controlled processTemperature, wash time and detergent are fixed. Every load is repeatable.
  • A cleaner, safer workshopDirt and rinse water stay in the machine. Your employee stays dry and clean.
  • Lower consumptionThe bath is filtered and reused, in a closed circuit. Less water and detergent are lost.
  • Fast and predictableA fixed cycle time makes the work easy to plan, even when many parts come in at once.

Which top loader suits your workshop

The K900 has a 900 mm basket, the K1150 a 1150 mm basket with a loading trolley. How many mowers you wash per load depends on the size of the covers.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from dealers and service centers

Which parts of a robotic mower go in the top loader?

The cover, the cutting disc, the wheels and the chassis. Remove the battery first. Also follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

Can plastic covers handle the warm bath?

Yes. Plastic covers are washed at a moderate temperature. You set the bath temperature yourself, up to 80 °C. Before you order, we work out with you which detergent suits the covers of the brands you service.

How long does a wash take?

The process timer runs from 0 to 90 minutes. How long your parts need depends on how caked-on the dirt is.

What happens to the dirty water?

The bath stays in the machine. After every cycle it drains back into the tank and is filtered. On the K900 and the K1150, an oil separator removes the floating oil.

What connection do I need?

The heating needs 7.5 kW on the K900 and 15 kW on the K1150. The exact connected load is stated in your quote.

What other parts can I clean in it?

Mower decks, chainsaw and brushcutter parts, and engine parts of garden machinery. In aluminum, steel, cast iron or plastic.
